Overtime Calculator

An overtime calculator turns hours into money: regular rate × multiplier × overtime hours gives gross overtime pay, and then the withholding layers come off — 22% federal supplemental withholding (reduced by the 2026 overtime premium deduction), 7.65% FICA, and your state's income tax if it has one.

Quick answer: Overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. After the 22% federal withholding, 7.65% FICA and state tax, a $25/hour worker with 10 overtime hours keeps roughly $270–$290 of the $375 gross (less in high-tax states, more in states with no income tax).

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How is overtime pay calculated?
Under the FLSA, covered employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Gross overtime = regular hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Some employers pay double time (2×) for holidays or after 12-hour shifts by policy or state rule (e.g., California daily overtime).
Why is my overtime check taxed so much?
Overtime is treated as supplemental wages, so many employers withhold a flat 22% for federal tax — higher than the effective rate many workers see on regular wages. From 2026 the half-time premium is deductible, which claws some of that back at filing. FICA always applies at 7.65%.
Is overtime calculated on my base salary if I'm salaried?
Only non-exempt salaried employees get overtime, and the regular rate is derived from the salary divided by the hours the salary is intended to cover. If you are a truly exempt employee, no overtime is owed regardless of hours worked.
